From Kansas to NYC (With A Few Stops In Between)

I have been a classical singer, a teacher, a music director and vocal coach, not to mention forty years as an Administrative Assistant in law. Like many artists, I had a full-time day job for the majority of my creative life.

Creatively, I have written and produced operas, composed several song cycles, written librettos and continue to write poetry, blogs, and novels.

I began my journey as a native of Southwestern Kansas. I began the study of piano at the age of four, and voice at age twelve. After completing a Bachelor of Music Education degree at Wichita State University and thirty-six graduate hours in musicology, I earned a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from The Peabody Institute of Music of the Johns Hopkins University. While at Peabody, I was scholarship student and received the Dushak Memorial Voice Award. Further graduate study was conducted at the Brahms Haus in Baden-Baden, Germany.

Once in New York, I co-founded and became Co-Director of Opera Nova. The New Yorker referred to Opera Nova as

… that spunky little downtown opera company....

Since beginning to compose at the age of fifty, I have  written three complete operas, four song cycles, several choral pieces, numerous arrangements, novels and poetry. My compositions have been featured in a showcase of music by women composers at the Pulse Ensemble Theater, Lake Placid Center for the Arts, The New York International Fringe Festival, 21st International World Day of Peace (Central Park Band Shell), The New York Public Library Donnell Music Series, Music at Emanuel (Queens, NY), The Brooklyn Lyceum Theatre, Music at Holy Trinity (Church of the Holy Trinity, NYC), Women in Music Festival (Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY), Brooklyn Repertory Opera, Music at St. Peter's, Musikanten Montana, WMP Concert Hall, and Trinity Lutheran Church in Astoria.

My Latest Phase---Sassy Senior

I recently retired from my part-time job as Office Administrator for Trinity Lutheran Church in Astoria, NY to move to Asheville, NC.  In this latest incarnation I hope to become my fit, "Sassy Senior" self and get on with all the things I love to do, such as blogging, writing, composing and all of my handicrafts. You will find out a lot more about all of those endeavors in my new blog.

I am currently working on the second book, Unexpected Visitors, in my juvenile series entitled Sophia of the Bright Red Sneakers  and editing the first book of the series, All in a Day's Work. I am also busy trying to find the time to do more work on my adult novel, The Blossoming of Bernice.
