Before European colonization, a network of seasonal roads crisscrossed a biologically diverse ecosystem in what is now Lower Manhattan. The Munsee Lenape called it “Manahatta” (the island of many hills). Rather than build permanent structures, the Lenape favored seasonal encampments.
